The Old Natchez Trace is one of the oldest transportation routes in North America, a path shaped by 10,000 years of human travel. Once a network of trails, it carried American Indians, traders, preachers, settlers, soldiers, and even future presidents through the homelands of the Natchez, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations. It also holds a darker historyโ€”enslaved people were forced along this route, making their way to the large slave markets of Natchez.

Walking the Old Sunken Trace today, you feel that history pressed into the earth itself. The banks rise steep around you, worn deep by time and passage. The light filters softly through the trees, casting shifting patterns on a path once trod by thousands. This painting captures that sense of historyโ€”not just as a place, but as something still present, still remembered by the land.
